Spanish A tin shredder is an industrial device specifically designed for processing metal waste, especially packaging waste. Its core task is to reduce the size of this waste mechanically, i.e., to “shred” or “crush” it. This waste primarily includes common household items such as aluminum cans and tinplate cans (commonly known as tinplate cans).
The tin shredder focuses on shearing and tearing materials with low speed and high torque, rather than violent hammering. This efficiently reduces volume while avoiding excessive metal dust, creating optimal conditions for subsequent sorting.
Applicable Waste Range: Far Beyond Cans
The tin shredder has a wide “recipe,” covering almost all thin-walled metal containers. Here are some typical examples:
- Aluminum cans: Coke cans, beer cans, etc., this is one of the most frequently processed materials.
- Tin-plated steel cans: Various food cans, milk powder cans, protein powder cans, biscuit boxes, etc. Although called “tin cans,” their main component is steel, with a thin tin coating for corrosion protection.
- Aerosol cans: Such as hairspray and insecticide spray cans. Extra care must be taken when handling these materials. It is essential to ensure the cans are completely empty and depressurized to prevent explosions during breakage. Professional processing lines typically have a dedicated pre-treatment stage.
- Aluminum food containers: Such as disposable aluminum lunch boxes, aluminum foil trays, etc.
- Chemical and daily necessities metal cans: Such as paint buckets, oil drums, coating cans, etc. Similarly, it is crucial to ensure the contents are emptied and properly cleaned before handling to avoid environmental pollution and safety risks.
- Other thin metal scraps: Production waste and stamping scraps from metal packaging manufacturing plants.

Main Types of Tin Shredders
Twin-Shaft Tin Shredder
Twin shaft tin shredder equipped with two shafts fitted with interlocking blades, these shafts rotate in opposite directions at low speeds, crushing materials through shearing, tearing, and compression.
This is one of the most common types used in industrial waste processing. It is highly versatile and particularly suitable for processing mixed waste, tough materials, and metal-plastic mixtures, making it the mainstay model for metal waste crushing.
Fitur: High torque, strong crushing force, wide range of materials processed, and relatively low noise.
Four-Shaft Tin Shredder
Typically four shaft tin shredder consists of an upper two-shaft pre-crushing zone and a lower two-shaft fine crushing zone, forming a two-stage crushing process.
Suitable for scenarios requiring more uniform and finer output particle size. It can directly crush materials to a suitable sorting size.
Fitur: High crushing efficiency and controllable output particle size, but with a more complex structure and higher cost.
Small Double-Shaft Tin Shredder
A small double-shaft tin shredder is a compact version of the standard twin-shaft shredder, using two counter-rotating shafts with interlocking blades to shear and tear materials. It is mainly suitable for small recycling facilities, workshops, or decentralized collection points that require on-site volume reduction rather than large-scale centralized processing. It can effectively crush aluminum cans, tinplate cans, and other thin-walled metal containers before transportation or further sorting.
Fitur: Compact structure, lower investment cost, stable low-speed and high-torque operation, and relatively simple maintenance.
Single-Shaft Tin Shredder
In single shaft tin shredder, a single rotor drives the moving blades to rotate, creating a shearing and tearing action with the stationary blades or the crusher chamber.
Fitur: Relatively simple structure, easy maintenance, and replaceable blades.
How Does Tin Shredder Work?
- Feeding: Waste metal cans (which can be bulk or pre-briquetted) are fed into the feed hopper at the top of the crusher via a conveyor belt.
- Grabbing and Tearing: The material falls into the crushing chamber under gravity, is hooked by the claws on two counter-rotating cutter shafts, and is forcibly dragged between the two shafts.
- Shearing and Crushing: Driven by enormous torque, the interlocking claws powerfully shear and tear the metal can, breaking it down into strips or flakes.
- Size Control (Optional): Some crushers are equipped with a screen at the bottom. Fragments smaller than the screen aperture fall through the screen, while larger fragments are lifted by the cutter shafts for secondary or multiple crushing until they are large enough to pass through the screen. This ensures uniform output size.
- Output: Crushed material meeting size requirements is discharged from the bottom of the crusher onto the discharge conveyor belt, ready for the next process—sorting.
Why Shredding Tin?
The difference between throwing a whole aluminum can directly into the furnace and throwing crushed metal fragments into the furnace is enormous. Crushing plays four irreplaceable roles in the metal recycling process:
Extreme volume reduction: This is the most obvious benefit. Untreated aluminum cans and metal cans are hollow and bulky, resulting in high costs for both warehouse storage and long-distance transportation. After crushing, the bulk density of the material can be increased several times or even dozens of times, greatly saving storage space and logistics costs. A study on PET bottle recycling showed that crushing can reduce transportation costs by up to 21.4%, and this logic also applies to metal cans.
Laying the foundation for efficient sorting: Post-consumer recycled metal packaging is often mixed together, such as aluminum cans and steel cans. Crushing breaks down metals into relatively uniform fragments, a process essential for efficient automated sorting (such as magnetic separation and eddy current separation). Without crushing, intact tanks may become entangled and clogged on sorting equipment, leading to a decrease in both sorting efficiency and purity.
Improving Smelting Efficiency and Metal Recovery: Crushed metal fragments have a larger specific surface area, allowing for faster and more uniform melting in the furnace, thus shortening smelting time and reducing unit energy consumption. Simultaneously, the crushing process helps remove some non-metallic impurities (such as labels and residues) adhering to the metal surface, creating conditions for subsequent coating removal processes, ultimately improving the purity and recovery rate of the recycled metal.
Material Purification and Impurity Removal: During the tearing and squeezing process of crushing, some non-metallic contaminants such as paper labels and plastic seals separate from the metal body, facilitating subsequent purification steps such as air separation or water washing.
